Walter Friedrich Cave (1863-1939), piano by C. Bechstein, series 62471, Berlin c. 1902, including corresponding piano stool. Tall rectangular walnut body, painted red-brown. Tapered conical legs on front travelling up from underside of piano to attached lamps. Projecting hinge bands, piano pedals, and lamp fixtures brass. Full frame with internal damping. Ebony wood and ivory keyboard. H 123 cm, W 154 cm, D 62 cm. The mechanical equipment has been restored. Textile covering on frame and upholstery on stool added later. Upholstered seat on stool height-adjustable. H 50 cm, W 52 cm, D 42 cm.
This is one of the finest examples of an Arts & Crafts C. Bechstein designed by Walter Cave, one of the greatest architects and designers in British History.
